We have a very exciting year planned to help explore our spiritual, social, and educational desires. We have a vibrant committee and always welcome more committee members, ideas and facilitators. Please send your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it . Here are the courses we've scheduled so far:

Building Your Own Theology

Explore your own spirituality. We use the Richard Gilbert series of books. We have one group continuing from last year moving onto book two and at least one new group starting with book one. Be on the lookout for the sign-up sheet on the Adult Education bulletin board. If enough people sign up, we will find a facilitator to begin another group. Amanda Winkler is the BYOT coordinator.

Spanophiles, a conversational Spanish group

We are open to new members. We meet the first and third Sundays of each month in the Teen Room after the service at 12:15 pm. We gather for about an hour. It's a fun group and a great way to not only practice your Spanish but get to know members of May Memorial. The number of people varies from week to week. You need to know that it is NOT a class. People who come have varied abilities and the focus is communication. It's not important to get your verb tenses correct; what we want to create is a fluency in the language.

T’ai Chi Chih

A gentle movement group which meets weekly during the day with Ann Pia will start again Oct. 7th. See Ann if your interested in exploring this wonderful group.

Third Annual Halloween Party

Family fun for all ages. Get us on your calendars today. Our not-so-scary/scary Halloween party will be held Saturday, October 18th, from 6 to 9 pm. Our Coming of Age and teen groups help with games and a haunted house. Look for more information in the next couple of weeks. See Therese Hogle with your ideas for decorations and/or food and beverage donations.

Microsoft Word with Peter Black

Learn standard routines for formatting Word documents. and share your secrets There are lots of things one can do with the computer-written word to make the material more legible, simpler to prepare, easy on paper use, and valuable simple shortcuts to frequently-used words and/or blocks of words, page and paragraph formatting, grammar and spell checking, use of a wonderful built-in Thesaurus, hyphenation (which also saves space and paper), special characters, making special use of computer’s characteristics to enhance the writing experience, and — of course — character size and types of font (even making proper dashes! Late October seminar — a Tuesday or Wednesday evening would be preferable, but Monday, Wednesday or Saturday afternoon are also possible. It would be great if folks bring their laptops.

Twisted Sisters

A once-a-month gathering for women of all ages, usually the 3rd Saturday of the month from 7pm to 9pm, with childcare provided. The sign up sheet is posted on the Adult Ed bulletin board, for people willing to be there by 7, act as official greeter and to arrange for child care. The fall meeting dates are September 20th and October 11th. We will skip November, December and February because of the holidays and school breaks. The plan for January and March is to co-host, with the new Men’s Fellowship group, game nights with a potluck dinner from 6 pm to 9 pm. The first regular Twisted Sisters meeting of 2009 will be April 18th with the remaining meeting dates of May 16th and June 20th. Andrea Wandersee is the person to see with any questions regarding Twisted Sisters.

Drop In Discussion (DID)

An offshoot of one of the BYOT groups. We had so much fun with BYOT that we didn’t want to stop meeting. We meet once a month to discuss a topic of the facilitator’s choice with some light reading (one page or so). Topic and facilitators will rotate monthly. Anyone interested in the month’s topic can get a copy of the reading and “drop in” for the discussion. We will meet every 4th Tuesday of the month in the Memorial Room from 7-9PM. September 23rd will be the next meeting. Jody Brown is the coordinator for DID.

Cakes for the Queen of Heaven

A five-session religious education curriculum in feminist theology for adults and older youth will be offered Sunday afternoons in the Memorial Room from 4-6 pm for five consecutive weeks beginning September 28th. Jody Brown is the facilitator. We hope to repeat the class again in January or February and then again in the spring.

Volume One of the long-awaited update of the popular feminist theology curriculum (In Ancient Times, by Shirley's Ranck) introduces participants to ancient Goddesses, weaving their stories together with major concerns of women today. The five-session adult religious education curriculum includes an introductory section featuring the author’s "Statement of Feminist Theology," Elinor Artman's "Brief Herstory of Cakes," and Nancy Vedder-Shults, "Baking Cakes for the Queen of Heaven." The themes of the Ssession plans are: The Sacred Female, In the Name of the Mother and the Daughter, Womanpower, The First Turning-From Goddess to God, and Reclaiming Women's Heritage of Peace."
