Last Sunday was an absolutely gorgeous late summer day. Most of our usual Sunday morning congregation was at Unirondack camp. Glenn and I had good work to do in town here — a memorial service and, of course, the Sunday morning service. But I admit I was still a bit jealous. I did get outdoors Sunday afternoon—an afternoon all the more precious for our noticeably early sunsets and cooler nights. At last, of all the things I might have been doing, this simple savoring was my highest priority. E. B. White once wrote, “If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world, and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.” Where does May Memorial fit in your plans and priorities? Will it be Sunday morning worship, or a family outing, or an afternoon lecture? Where do worship and religious education fit in your life? Occasionally, someone who has come out on an especially snowy Sunday morning will say, “I came for you, Jean.” I always feel honored and blessed by that remark. Who wouldn’t? We come for one another. We live, as Hugh Heclo put it, “an implicated life, always both inheriting and bequeathing.” (Receiving and giving, savoring and saving...) This fall, put us on your list of priorities. ~ Blessings, Jean |
